Part 141: Episode 5, Day 3, Trial Latter: Desperado

Music: Silence

We're back in court, with a big hammer to use to nail a certain cowboy.

Sound: Gallery

"Thank goodness; that idiot with the megaphone is gone!"

Sound: Gavel

Music: Trial

(Ema didn't come back...)

Now seems like a good time for a quick distraction. As we've seen at other times in the game, a change in companions tends to change some of the background dialogue. We're not in an investiation sequence, so we can't look around the environment to see what's changed without Ema's commentary. However we can still use the first ability Ema granted to us in this episode - examining evidence!

I'll be as brief as possible here...

A number is engraved on the back of the badge.

I wish they'd put my name on it instead...

His name and ID number is written on it.

"Sergeant Bruce Goodman, ID# 5842189"

quote:

Original line referred to the man as "Detective Bruce Goodman." However in the image you can just make out that it says "Sergeant" there at the top.

"King of Prosecutors." The names of past recipients are etched on the plate.

Manfred von Karma's name appears here too... How ironic.

The victim Bruce Goodman's blood still remains on the blade.

I wonder if Edgeworth got this knife because the handle matches his clothes...?

"Miles Edgeworth - 17:12"...

It's dated the day of the murder.

Come to think of it, I don't have a strap on my mobile phone at all.

I hate having useless things dangling off it.

The redial button. It dials the number of the last person called.

The last call was to Ema. I wonder what they spoke about...?

I was hoping Phoenix would actually call Ema and try to get her to come back.

Blood is splattered over the white enamel surface.

It must be Lana's blood, from the cut on her right hand she now has bandaged.

These blood traces are from Bruce Goodman, the victim.

He must have tried to run after he was stabbed.

"SL-9" is written on a small tag attached to the knife.

It was the weapon used in that incident two years ago; and has known many victims.

So Joe Darke used the same knife on each victim?

Ema Skye is written on the side in permanent marker.

She seems awfully possessive about a can of luminol.

"AI-16" is written on the tag.

That means it has nothing to do with the current case.

"SL-9 11" is written on the tag.

It seems this is more evidence from that incident.

There's a trace of old blood on this jar.

This was evidence in the SL-9 Incident...

The blood must be from back then.

The jar has no bottom, so the hole goes right through.

I wonder if it's really a jar, or some kind of weird telescope...?

And with that, we conclude our mid-episode evidence review. With 25 pieces of evidence in the court record now, I'm having a hard time keeping track of it all. For now, let's get back to the trial.

the officer in charge of guarding the evidence room on the day of the crime.

Music: Silence

There's our guy. Still getting sloshed on the clock.

Witness, please state your name and occupation.

Music: Jake Marshall ~ The Detective from the Wild West

I feel a little mischievous, inflicting this witness on Edgeworth.

Sound: Light Bulb

To be exact, it's Jake Marshall... Your Honor.

I'm disappointed in Edgeworth's lack of outrage at Marshall's behavior. I guess Edgeworth isn't really looking to get anything out of this witness, so doesn't care if he's being difficult here.

Now, Mr. Marshall. Let me ask you something.

Is this correct?

According to the papers, pardner.

What do you mean?

Sound: Gavel

Music: Silence

Maybe it's best we get on with this quickly.

in plain old English!

But Marshall is speaking an "old" variant of English!

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Moderato

My job was to keep a wary eye on that bone orchard.

Besides, the room's protected by two security systems, anyway.

Music: Silence

Wouldn't a bone orchard be a better reference for a graveyard? Or maybe a morgue? Doesn't seem to fit an evidence room as well. Maybe he's just referring to someone supposedly dying in there?

I can't say I particularly care for your attitude...

Jake Marshall has the opposite attitude towards the court as Angel Starr. Instead of bribing the judge, he's just disdainful of the entire process.

Wait a minute...

Sound: Realization

I mean the security cameras and the ID card reader.

I reckon even a cowpoke like you knows about those.

Fingerprint activated locks?

What kind of new-fangled doohickeys are those?
Sound: Realization

(He's not being very helpful...)

This one seems like trouble.

Okay Mr. Wright, he's all yours.

Sound: Testimony 2

(Before I use it though, I'd better up the ante...)

I'm guessing Phoenix means we need to press here before presenting anything? I'm pretty sure we can just shoot to kill from the very start, but let's play this out.

My job was to keep a wary eye on that bone orchard.

How exactly did you "keep an eye" on the evidence room?

I just made sure nothing moved in the security camera monitor. That room's so still,

You "interred" them?

Videos of nothing aren't that useful. When the time would come, I'd erase the tape.

What an awful job. Watching an empty room all day, then deleting the recording after making sure that nothing really happened in them.

(This guy has a flare for the dramatic, but it isn't going to do him any good.)

They said I was supposed to make rounds three times a day, but that ain't my style.

But you made your rounds on the day of the crime, right?

Ain't you heard a word I said, pardner?

...

Um, I'm afraid I don't understand.
Sound: Realization

(No desperados I know join the police force...)

So, Officer Marshall. On the day of the crime...?

The judge being oddly pro-active here.

Sorry pardner, can't say I do.

(How does this guy avoid being fired...?)

Besides, the room's protected by two security systems, anyway.

Of course. Back in the day my locker was a goldmine of evidence!

Sound: Desk Slam

Sorry, pardner, I ain't good with machines.

I couldn't even tell you how a bike works.

That's quite, uh... incredible.

It's well known that some detectives are unaware of their presence.

At any rate, it doesn't seem that this is relevant to the crime.

If I remember right, I was at a street-side saloon at the time it went down.

What were you doing in a place like that?
Sound: Whack

I was eating spaghetti.

Do you mean to tell us...
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Damage 2

Not all desperados eat tacos, pardner.
Sound: Realization

Sound: Stab

(That's strange...)

(This is usually where Edgeworth says,)

Sound: Realization

Edgeworth knows exactly what Marshall is all about already.

I'm just an innocent travelin' man, so if you're out of ammo it's time I hit the trail.

Out of "ammo," officer Marshall?

If you plan to pin me to this crime, then you'd better draw.

Otherwise, you're just wastin' my time.

Hmm...

One thing seems clear.

Despite being responsible for guarding the evidence room,

the witness doesn't appear to have seen anything.
Sound: Realization

(Apparently your superious don't...)
Sound: Whack

Well, we're out of testimony. So, what to present here? We're pretty early in the update, so I'll give you all this one for free.

That last press and the end-of-testimony hints from Phoenix's musing are both signs to just use our trump card straight away. Either of the last two lines will work here.

Music: Silence

Officer Marshall. Doesn't it strike you as odd?

That is, you being called in to testify like this?

...

And yet you dragged me down here.

Explain yourself, pardner.

It's quite simple.

Or, to be exact...

a handprint.
Sound: Realization

Music: Investigation - Core

Hmph! Listen real good, pardner.

Like I said, I'm the caretaker of that crypt.

I pay my respects... that is, make my rounds, about once a month.

I only wish it were, Officer,

Sound: Desk Slam

but you see...

Sound: Objection

Sound: Gallery

Sound: Gavel

Witness! What's the meaning of this!?
Sound: Whack

The blood was wiped away. However!

Well, Officer Marshall?
Sound: Drama Pound

...

It seems to me...
Sound: Realization

!
Sound: Light Bulb

I take it you have an explanation then, Officer Marshall?

Sound: Gavel

Music: Silence

found at the scene of the crime!

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Moderato

One of them just happened to be at the same place as the bloodstained handprint.

The bloodstain and the fingerprint are completely unrelated.

See? I had nothing to do with it.

Music: Silence

I'm wondering how Marshall knew the murderer wore gloves, but otherwise kind of stumped on this one. Hopefully pressing reveals something.

Hmm...

The witness's explanation appears valid,

although there's room for doubt.

The defense may now cross-examine the witness.

(This guy's hiding something, I can feel it!)

Sound: Testimony 2

(I can't let him squirm out of this one.)

(I've got to find something,)

Okay... let's find... something.

Like I said, it's only natural for my fingerprints to be in that evidence room.

How long do fingerprints stick around on a surface, anyway? I guess in a place like the evidence room that's kept pretty sterile and not disturbed very often, they could still be found a long time later?

Yeah, that's right. That, and one more thing...

Sound: Realization

I'd thought that might be the case. But does that fact actually help him or hurt him?

What!? What do you mean?
Sound: Light Bulb

I mean what I said.

Sound: Wipe

We flashback-zoom across the evidence room once again. Reminds me of the camera panning back and forth in that video.

All that's in there now though is a heap of broken dreams.

I see...

As someone who struggled with the fingerprinting mini-game, I suppose I can't really say that the location of the print we pulled is definitively from the bloody handprint rather than any other time Marshall may have touched his locker.

(Apparently his fingerprint data was never removed from that locker's programming.)

Sound: Realization

Sound: Select Jingle

Our "trump card" has been updated with relevant new information.

One of them just happened to be at the same place as the bloodstained handprint.

Wasn't mine. It's no mystery.

Please explain.

It just so happened...

The murderer touched the locker where my fingerprint was by chance.

Sound: Desk Slam

The chances of that happening are a million to one!
Sound: Whack

Sound: Whack

I don't know, how often would you really touch the outside door of a locker that you just open by pulling on the handle?

The chances of that not happening are a million to one!

Get one thing straight, pardner!

You wanna know why?

The bloodstain and the fingerprint are completely unrelated.

Unrelated?

They're as different as night and day.

Music: Silence

Kinda like "cereal" and "serial."

Is that a subtle SL-9 reference?

He's right...

although seemingly alike, they're totally different.
Sound: Whack

Music: Questioning - Moderato

Or didn't you know the murderer was wearing gloves?

How do you know that!?

Sound: Wipe

(Oh yeah, I think we tried that too.)

Hmm...

So that would mean...

the murderer, wearing gloves,

And then wiped away the blood. All while not disturbing Marshall's latent print.

That's the only logical conclusion.

Sound: Realization

Once we've pressed on both the first and last lines of testimony (in either order), we get a new scene.

Music: Silence

The picture...?

!
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Realization

We're back to the video...

(The security tape...)

Well. There was one more odd thing on that tape. Can we use it to prove that Marshall was in there?

Sound: Gavel

This isn't getting us anywhere, Mr. Wright.

Y-yes, Your Honor.

Music: Questioning - Moderato

While it doesn't seem like much happened there...

We do get a new statement that directly references the video. Unfortunately, directly presenting the video here doesn't actually work. We need to press a little harder first.

What do you mean by that?

...

Sound: Desk Slam

Blind spots?
Sound: Realization

Places you can't see!

Sound: Realization

Sound: Realization

they could leave the room without being caught on tape!

For some reason the start of the video is shown twice here.

Sound: Desk Slam

We don't have time for your speculations, Mr. Wright.

Well, Mr. Wright.

If you can show us evidence in this video that indicates

Well, obviously we're doing it.

Very well.

quote:

If you back off here instead:

(I might be walking right into Officer Marshall's trap.)

(I'd better try and find out a little more information.)

It seems we should be moving back to the testimony.

Very well.

Officer Marshall, can you please give your testimony again?

We go back to the cross from here. But what's interesting about that line, is it gives the game an actual narrative explanation for the structure of the crosses. They literally are what they appear to be - the witness repeating their testimony word-for-word.

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

Sound: Realization

Sound: Gavel

Now then, let's have another look at the video.

We're back at the video, and we have a penalty attached this time! I'll do you all a favor and provide another link to the video for your perusal. Watch it while keeping in mind the new information we've gained this update, and tell me, which video segment contains the contradiction?
